Ingredients
2 cups cooked short-grain rice (preferably Korean rice)
250 beef (sirloin or ribeye), thinly sliced
2~3 cups assorted vegetables (such as spinach, carrots, zucchini, shiitake mushrooms, bean sprouts)
1~2 eggs (sunny-side up or poached)
Sesame oil
Salt
Sesame seeds
1 tbsp vegetable oil (for cooking)
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp sesame oil
1 tbsp sugar
1 clove garlic, minced
0.25 tsp black pepper
3 tbsp gochujang (Korean red pepper paste)
1 tbsp sesame oil
1 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp rice vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)
1~2 tsp water (to adjust consistency)
Directions
- Marinate the Beef:
In a bowl, combine soy sauce, sesame oil, sugar, minced garlic, and black pepper. Add the sliced beef and let it marinate for at least 30 minutes. - Prepare the Vegetables:
Spinach: Blanch in boiling water for 1-2 minutes, drain, and toss with a little sesame oil and salt.
Carrots: Julienne and sauté in a pan with a bit of vegetable oil until tender. Season with salt.
Zucchini: Julienne and sauté until tender, seasoning with salt.
Mushrooms: Sauté shiitake mushrooms in vegetable oil until cooked, seasoning with salt.
Bean Sprouts: Blanch in boiling water for 2-3 minutes, drain, and toss with sesame oil and salt. - Cook the Beef:
Heat a pan over medium-high heat and add a bit of vegetable oil. Stir-fry the marinated beef until cooked through (about 3-4 minutes). Set aside. - Make the Gochujang Sauce:
In a small bowl, mix gochujang, sesame oil, sugar, vinegar, and water. Adjust the consistency to your liking. - Assemble the Bibimbap:
In a large bowl, place a serving of cooked rice at the bottom. Arrange the sautéed vegetables and cooked beef on top in an aesthetically pleasing manner.
Add a fried or poached egg on top. Drizzle with sesame oil and sprinkle with sesame seeds. - Serve:
Serve with the gochujang sauce on the side, allowing everyone to add the sauce to their own bowl according to taste. Mix everything together before eating!
Notes
- Tips
Feel free to customise the vegetables based on what you have on hand or what you like.
For a vegetarian version, you can omit the meat and add more vegetables or tofu.
Bibimbap (/ˈbiːbɪmbæp/ BEE-bim-bap; Korean: 비빔밥; lit. “mixed rice”), sometimes romanized as bi bim bap or bi bim bop, is a Korean rice dish.
The term bibim means “mixing” and bap is cooked rice. It is served as a bowl of warm white rice topped with namul (sautéed or blanched seasoned vegetables) and gochujang (chili pepper paste). Egg and sliced meat (usually beef) are common additions, stirred together thoroughly just before eating. In South Korea, Jeonju, Jinju, and Tongyeong are especially famous for their versions of bibimbap. In 2017, the dish was listed at number 40 on the World’s 50 most delicious foods readers’ poll compiled by CNN Travel. (Source: Wikipedia)
