Ingredients

  • Chicken
  • 500 g boneless chicken thighs, sliced into thin strips

  • 2 tbsp cornstarch

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 0.5 tsp black pepper powder

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil, for frying

  • Sauce
  • 0.5 cup soy sauce

  • 0.25 cup brown sugar

  • 1 tbsp ginger, minced

  • 1 tbsp garlic, minced

  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar

  • 0.5 tsp red pepper flakes, optional for heat

  • 1 spring onion, chopped

  • sesame seeds, for garnish

Directions

  • Prepare the Chicken:
In a bowl, combine the cornstarch, flour, salt, and pepper. Toss the sliced chicken in the mixture until evenly coated.
  • Fry the Chicken:
Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken in a single layer (you may need to do this in batches). Cook until golden brown and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the chicken and set aside.
  • Make the Sauce:
In the same skillet, add a bit more oil if needed, then sauté the ginger and garlic for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
Add the soy sauce, brown sugar, rice vinegar, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir well and bring to a simmer.
  • Combine:
Return the fried chicken to the skillet and toss to coat in the sauce. Let it cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the chicken is heated through and well-coated.
  • Serve:
Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds. Serve hot over steamed rice or with noodles.

Notes

  • This dish is sweet, savory, and slightly sticky, making it a favorite for many. Enjoy your homemade Mongolian chicken!
