Ingredients
- Marinade
500 g beef (preferably rump steak)
0.5 tsp salt
0.25 cup corn starch
2 tbsp Shaoxing wine (Chinese cooking wine)
2 tbsp vegetable oil
- Sauce
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 tbsp black pepper powder
2 tbsp soy sauce
2 tbsp rice wine vinegar
1 tsp garlic, minced
2 tbsp oyster sauce
- Vegetables
1 medium brown onion
2 spring onions
Directions
- Marinade
- Thinly slice beef and place in bowl.
- Season with salt.
- Add corn starch.
- Add Shaoxing wine.
- Add oil.
- Mix well.
- Set aside to marinate for 1 hour.
- Sauce
- Add brown sugar to a small bowl.
- Add black pepper.
- Add soy sauce.
- Add rice wine vinegar.
- Add minced garlic.
- Add oyster sauce.
- Mix well.
- Cooking
- Cut the onion into petals (semi-quarters) and separate the layers.
- Cut the spring onions into 5 cm strips.
- On a medium to hot fry pan or wok brown the marinated beef.
- Add the onions.
- Add the spring onions.
- Add the sauce.
- Mix well.
- Reduce heat and cook for approximately 5 minutes.
- Serve with rice.
Notes
- Food for thought: Although termed Mongolian Beef, this dish supposedly originated in Taiwan. 🤔
